DOMi & JD BECK's debut album 'NOT TiGHT' holds its own in a capricious industry
Excited to follow Blue Note's newest addition
Music connoisseurs like me 😉 know it’s tough to objectively measure your own ability to stay abreast of industry trends. But I’ve come up with a heuristic I term the NPR-TD-Pitchfork index (NPR-Tiny Desk-Pitchfork) for Substack music bloggers that I’d love to see pick up some traction:
n = [(blog post publication date - first npr tiny desk date) + (blog post publication date - pitchfork album review release date)] / 2
Pitchfork album review date: Aug 4 2022
NPR Tiny Desk Concert: Aug 10 2022
This blog post: Aug 12 2022
This blog post’s index: (2 + 8) / 2 = 5
My first blog post on DOMi & JD BECK: July 11 2022
My first blog post’s index: negative 😎 Happy to be setting the curve 😎
Last month I found “TAKE A CHANCE”, a preview single off DOMi & JD Beck’s debut album released July 29 - the first on Anderson .Paak’s label APESHIT by UMG, and Blue Note Records (that Herbie link do be strong). “TAKE A CHANCE” remains my favorite on the album; it highlights the vocal talents of these two multi-instrumentalists and features a .Paak solo.
“TWO SHRiMPS” features Mac DeMarco — here’s his Pitchfork documentary:
“PiLOT”, an absolutely stacked, chilled track featuring Snoop Dogg, Busta Rhymes, and Anderson .Paak:
Overall, “WHATUP” lays a solid foundation demonstrating the instrumental skills backing the entire album, and as mentioned above “TAKE A CHANCE” is the top standout for me followed by an even more star-studded “PiLOT”.
