Christian French, 'Meet Me At Our Spot'
This 25 year old LA transplant cracks the electro-pop code with latest album
I begin this blog post with a less-popular video from a lesser-known artist, Christian French (with RCA/Disruptor, best known for signing The Chainsmokers) with the high-profile vocals and instrumentals I’d expect from a Sony joint venture. I chose this one to open because the lighting, staging, and styling screams millennial Brooklyn hipster but French’s music in general leans more EDM concert.
French showed great promise with Chainsmokers-esque debut single “love ride” 5 years ago:
The thing that put French on my radar was this cover of “Meet Me At Our Spot” by The Anxiety, Willow Smith and Tyler Cole, which became the title of French’s latest seven-track album released in November. Naming your album for the title track is one thing but naming it for a cover is next level power move.
Overall the latest album is French’s best work by electro-pop standards; personally I appreciate rawer vocals and less produced instrumentals in some of his earlier work and leaner covers, but this artist can do both and that’s promising for sonically diverse albums in the future.
“karma” is the musical standout of the album for me while “golden years” and “butterfly fields” are the most popular across all listeners — danceable, relatable, and just generally Good EDM/Pop.
I am excited to see French’s evolution in the future.
